This world is an uncertain place. Here, you have to be cautious of every step that you take. It’s common for one to make mistakes in life or take things for granted but there are consequences for each of it. You don’t want to face the music when it comes to making wrong health choices. Such a choice is maintaining hand hygiene. For some, it might be something that one just does on a daily basis, for others it is an act of utmost importance.

Why should we focus on washing hands?

What is so important about washing hands that it should be focused? The answer is removal of germs. Germs are those pesky microorganisms that get on to your body without even telling you – they just clearly slide by. If they are not kicked off your body, they’d surely strike when the time is right and what’s the result? You get ill. That’s not something that you’d want to happen to yourselves or to any member of your family. Contaminated hands are one of the most common sites where germs are present. In order to stop this from happening you need to wash hands and this is why it’s important to know if you are doing it right. Just as we take home care seriously, personal care should also be considered equally important.

You might think that you have got this hand washing thing all figured out but you might be wrong. When it comes to washing hands, making feeble efforts won’t just do it. You should know how to do it and what are the recommendations? Respiratory diseases, food borne illnesses contribute to a lot of death in the world. In 2017 alone, around 650,000 people lost their lives to flue. If we can stop this mode of transmission then a lot of lives can be saved. The first step to doing so is washing hands. Yes, you can use antibacterial wipes to clean hands or other surfaces when you deem fit but first and foremost step is to wash hands.

When to wash hands?

Centre for disease control and prevention (CDC) recommends washing hands for at least 20 seconds with bar soap and water. You can use any soap that you like. Washing hands in the right manner breaks the outer most layers of the bacteria and viruses and ultimately kills them, leaving you with clean hands free of germs. Now when should you wash hands? Although you should wash hands frequently but here are some instances where you should always wash hands. After using the toilet, after and before preparing food, after disposing garbage, after being in contact with animals, their waste or feed, after sneezing or coughing, after caring for a sick person, and before removing or putting contact lenses.

How to properly wash hands?

The first and the foremost step is to wet hands properly under running water. You can use soap like Dettol soap or any other to get the job done. Just make sure that you are completely covering your hands front and back up to your wrists and if needed, up to your elbows. Now lather your palms by gently rubbing both against each other. Be sure to take your time as palms are often the dirtiest part of your hand. Now do the same with back of the hands, put your right palm over the back of the left hand with fingers interlaced and repeat the process with the other hand. Don’t miss out on your fingernails; be sure to get the dirt under those nails. Also pay attention to space in between your fingers, then comes the base of the thumb, while you are at your fingers, clean this space too. Last but not the least; rub your wrists in a circle wise fashion. Now rinse thoroughly under running water and then dry it off with a towel or tissue.

As an alternative, when you don’t have access to soap you can also use hand sanitizer. The main motive is clean hands free of germs. So there you have it, the right way to wash hands.
